We’ve all got hair, for better or for worse. Some days we may have a great hair day, while other days we have a terrible greasy hair day. In reality, there’s no way around it. Greasy and oil are a normal part of life whether we like it or not. However, we can deal with greasy hair and decrease the amount of greasy we are experiencing. At 18I8 men’s salon in Brookhaven, we recognize the normalcy of greasy hair, but we also have some tips to share about how to deal with it!

Why Does Hair Get Greasy?

All hair types are different and some hair gets more greasy than others. Basically, greasy hair all comes down to the sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands are small exocrine glands in the skin that release sebum, an oily substance, to make our skin and hair waterproof. Greasy hair is caused by overactive sebaceous glands. Unfortunately, there are more glands located on your face and scalp than other part of your body, which is the primary reason for a greasier face and greasy hair.

Your sebaceous glands can be affected by many factors, including the following:

Hair can be thick or thin, curly or straight, and many different colors. Which also means that your sebaceous glands will react differently than a friend or family member’s. While greasy hair is frustrating and annoying, it’s a part of life. At our Sandy Springs barbershop, we have some tips of the trade that may help you in your greasiest situations.

Decrease The Grease!

For men’s grooming, we have a couple of suggestions for decreasing greasy hair or making the best of a greasy situation. First, check out the hair products you are using. What are they made of? Cream and oil-based products increase grease levels. At 18I8 Buckhead men’s salon, we recommend avoiding all hair products with silicones; they can make your hair look greasier than it actually is and increase or attract other oils and dirt. Instead, we advise using water-based products which can be easily washed out at any time.

Second, let’s talk about shampooing and the type of shampoo you use. Depending on your hair type, a shampoo with a harsher sulfate may be necessary. This will be more forceful on grease and in turn, decrease the amount of grease present. You can also periodically change the shampoo you are using; that way, your hair and scalp do not get used to the same shampoo. Each shampoo will have a slightly different effect on your grease levels. Next, how often are you washing your hair? There is a careful balance between washing your hair too much and not washing your hair enough. Washing your hair too much can actually strip your hair of normal levels of sebum, causing your sebaceous glands to overproduce and making your hair even more greasy. On the opposite side, obviously not washing your hair at all will cause unwanted oil to build up and stick to all of your hair follicles and hair strands. Each person is different; we encourage you to try a trial period of shampooing a couple times a week instead of every day to determine your hair type and your grease levels.

Third, avoid using dry shampoo for the long run. Dry shampoo is a great fix for the short term. However, if you overuse it, it can actually cause oil buildup on the scalp which will result in dandruff-like flaking. Obviously, dandruff and grease are both unwanted. Find your happy medium!
